How To Get The Rockabilly Look!

If you love the figure-hugging dresses and leopard print sweaters of the rockabilly look, read on to find out how to achieve the style.

Rockabilly was one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music which emerged in the 1950s, and has seen several revivals since, most notably in the 1980s. In terms of fashion, the rockabilly genre was somewhat of a rebellion of the buttoned-up, conservative look of the late 1940s. Girls tended to dress in full-skirt dresses, with low heeled shoes, and ponytails. However, those with economic and social backgrounds that allowed a little more leeway with regards to rebellion took rockabilly to its limit, with girls choosing pencil skirts, tight sweaters, and stiletto heels to show off their naughty side.
The full skirts, pencil skirts, figure-hugging dresses, and tight sweaters of the 1950s are what influenced the rockabilly fashion as we know and love it today. If you’ve admired the look for a while and decided to give it a go, here are a few tips to ease you into the rockabilly look...

The Hair
When creating a rockabilly look, one of the easiest things to begin with is your hair. In terms of colour most things work with a rockabilly look, but many women seem to favour black, bright red, or bleached blonde hair. As for style, curls are always a winner so invest in some rollers, a curling iron, and a lot of hairspray. Use the rollers to create victory rolls (search Google for tutorials), have a think, straight fringe cut in, curl your hair, and adorn it with a flower or a cute headscarf tied in a bow.

The Makeup
The rockabilly look is fairly simple to achieve if you know your way around a makeup bag. Start by creating a flawless base with primer, foundation, and concealer. Add a small amount of blush to give your face a little colour, and seal your base with loose of pressed powder. The rockabilly look is all about the eyes and lips. Apply black eyeliner and flick it up at the edges to make your eyes look big and sultry, then give your lashes a coat of black mascara, and finish the look off with bright lipstick.

The Clothes

If you’re not ready to go full rockabilly yet then you can add accents of the style by wearing a top in a rockabilly retro style print. For example leopard print, polka dots, cherry print, gingham, and tattoo print are all favoured by rockabilly girls. Styles such as halter-neck tops and shirts that tie at the waist will look great. Team your rockabilly print top or rockabilly corset with cropped jeans, and when you’re feeling braver, a rockabilly 1950's pencil skirt or a full swing skirt or dress, with a pair of stilettos to finish the look off.

The advantages of wearing a corset

Here at The Burlesque Boutique we love our corsets and have corsets in almost every colour you can imagine! We stock plastic boned fashion corsets for beginners and those just looking for a Moulin Rouge fancy dress outfit, and we also stock steel boned corsets for those who want a high quality corset that can be used for waist training. Did you know there are a great number of physical and mental benefits to wearing a corset? The full breakdown can be found on the Lucy’s Corsetry blog but we’ve picked out our favourites here...

·       Corsets are good for posture and back problems: Corsets can help to minimise back pain by correcting posture. They are often used to help people who have experienced slipped discs, vertebral fractures, and those who suffer from autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. They promote good posture and prevent the back pain that is associated by sitting in a slouched or hunched position for too long.

·       Corsets can help with menstrual cramps: Many women who suffer from painful menstrual cramps each month experience temporary relief by lying in the foetal position, which puts a little pressure on the peritoneal organs and alleviates the pain a little. Wearing a corset during a period mimics the foetal position technique by exerting pressure on the same organs and reducing uterine contractions.

·       Corsets can be a good weight loss tool: Wearing a corset acts as a sort of external gastric band as it does not allow for very much in the way of expansion around the stomach area. Whilst wearing a corset you’ll find that you consume smaller portions of food to avoid uncomfortable bloating. Seeing your slimmer figure whilst wearing a corset can also spur you on to eat healthily and exercise to achieve a slimmer figure for real.

·       Corsets act as armour: Wearing a corset can make you feel as though you’re wearing armour that separates you from the outside world and protects you from harm. If you’ve suffered from low self-esteem or been abused in the past a corset can give you the emotional strength to face people without feeling as vulnerable or exposed. The rigidity of a corset can make you feel as though there is more structure in your life, helping you to feel more in control of things. A corset will also boost your self-esteem too as you’ll look and feel amazing wearing it!

4 Great Hen Party Ideas

Organising the hen party is usually the responsibility of the maid of honour and the bridesmaids. There’s a lot of pressure these days to make it absolutely amazing and blow all other hen parties out of the water. The days of a nice meal and a night out on the town with an ‘L’ plate strapped to your back are long gone. Hen parties have gone big! We’ve put together 4 of the best ideas for a hen party with a difference...

·       A burlesque themed night: We girls love a good excuse to dress up, and what could be more fun than getting kitted out in a burlesque style outfit. Get the hens strapped into corsets, add some ruffles and a few feathers and hit the town. It’ll make for some great memories and photos for the bride to treasure from her ‘last night of freedom’.

·       A day out at Go Ape: If you want to do something a little different that gets your adrenaline pumping then try an adventure day out at somewhere like Go Ape. You’ll be strapped into a harness and will spend the day whizzing through a forest on a series of zip lines! After all that fresh air and activity you’ll certainly have earned a glass of wine or two!

·       A cupcake decorating class: Cupcakes are everywhere at the moment, and they just seem to keep getting prettier and cuter! A cupcake decorating class is a great hen party activity, and you get to eat cake at the end of it, what’s not to love?! Keep an eye on voucher sites like Groupon as they quite often feature discounted cupcake decorating classes throughout the country.

·       Go clay pigeon shooting: If you really want to do something out of the ordinary then why not go clay pigeon shooting? A day in the countryside being taught how to handle a shot gun and bring down clay pigeons can help the bridal party to de-stress before the big day and take out any pent up frustration!
